  • 📰 What Happened?

  • In one of the most tragic aviation disasters in India’s recent history, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025. The flight was headed to London Gatwick, but it never made it past the city’s limits.

    The aircraft went down at around 1:38 PM IST, crashing into the Meghani Nagar residential area, striking parts of B.J. Medical College's hostel. The impact was devastating.


    💔 Casualties and Survivors

    Out of 242 people onboard230 passengers and 12 crew members241 have been confirmed dead. This includes passengers and people on the ground, such as five medical students in the hostel building.

    The Sole Survivor

    Miraculously, one passenger, a British-Indian man seated in 11A, survived the crash. He is currently hospitalized and in stable condition. Authorities have not released his name for privacy reasons.

    The passenger manifest included:

    • 169 Indian nationals

    • 53 British citizens

    • 7 Portuguese

    • 1 Canadian

    🛫 About the Aircraft

    The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a model celebrated for its advanced design and fuel efficiency. Until this point, the Boeing 787 had a perfect safety record—this crash is officially the first fatal incident involving a 787 Dreamliner.


    🧪 Ongoing Investigation

    The Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the investigation, supported by:

    • UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB)

    • US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)

    • Boeing and GE Aerospace (the engine maker)

    • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

    The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder (black boxes) have been recovered and sent for analysis.


    🧬 Victim Identification

    Due to the severe impact and resulting fire, authorities are using DNA testing to identify many of the victims. Families are being contacted, and grief counselors are on-site.


    🛑 Airport Disruptions

    Ahmedabad Airport was temporarily shut down following the incident but resumed partial operations in the evening with heavy security and limited flight activity.

    The Indian Prime Minister, in a press release, expressed deep condolences, calling it "a day of great sorrow for the nation." World leaders from the UK, Portugal, and Canada also sent their sympathies.
